Touring, the Niagara way
Most wineries, especially in the Niagara Region, have a drop-in policy: you’re always welcome. And there is bound to be a tour either just starting when you do drive up to the chateau. Knowledgeable staff, wine lovers themselves, will take you through the entire operation – the field, the aging room and the bottling area to teach you about their wines and why they love them so much. After that, it’s off to the tasting area, where they will offer several of the winery’s finest lines. You learn how to swish the wine around in the glass to release its flavours and how to detect the pepper, strawberry and even grapefruit flavours derived directly from the soil and into the grape.

Even if you don’t have time for a full tour, many wineries open their bar to you for a sampler, often at a fraction of the cost of the full bottle wine. That way, you get to find the ideal wine for your palette or occasion.

On-site expertise
Niagara’s winemakers are so dedicated that they often spend all of their time at the winery, with some even building their homes on the same land or close by so they can pay as much attention to their craft as they need. That means these matriarchs and patriarchs are often on-site or nearby to answer your questions. A visit to one winery web site also unveiled an “Ask the Winemaker” section, so even if you aren’t in the area, you can pick their brain.

And, even if the owners are not on-site, their staff is always happy to help. Most staff join on because of their love of wine and can offer their suggestions on the types of wines best suit you – and better yet – how they got to be that way.

Buy the crate
Do you have an event or occasion for which you need several bottles of wine? Then it’s worth the trip to the winery to pick up your favourite wine directly from the source. It’s a one-stop-shop – you pick your vintage while enjoying the scenery and the friendliness that is Niagara.

Events, especially
Make it special – a special event, that is. Besides creating some of the nation’s finest wines, Niagara wineries often open their doors to your friends and family for everything from weddings and anniversary parties, to corporate events. Many of the larger wineries have set aside an area for seminars and conferences.

Not in the mood or market for a large event? You can arrange a more intimate evening by taking advantage of the winery’s dining area. It’s often said that wine is the culinary world’s partner. The right wine with the right meal and you have a chance for creating an unforgettable moment. And, it’s also an ideal time to learn which wines go best with which dish – before you try it at home.

Pick up a map!
Maps of the Niagara Region wine route is available at all LCBOs and online, so print one off, pack into the car and just drive. Signs along with route will take away the need to stop and ask for directions. And, if you stop at a winery for directions, be sure to discover some more new wines.
